Opensource ERP Solutions

I think Opensource Enterprise Resource Planning systems such as OpenBravo, OpenTaps, and TinyERP have a lot to offer. Especially the ones which come preloaded with Payroll and Accounting systems. Opensource development is a great opportunity to test systems due to the ubiquitous nature of opensource. Detecting and resolving bugs is quicker.

Ubuntu 8.10 is impressive!!!!

Hi guys i attended the Ubuntu 8.10 launch hosted by Webdev, with a few reservations being inclined to SUSE Linux. However i was quite impressed with the ease of use and installation. It did not take me more than five minutes to get wine up and running through the use of apt-get it was a breeze.

It reminds of the old adage never judge a book by its cover. I have always regarded Ubuntu as an under dog, but with Ubuntu 8.10 i would say guys you are on the right track. I went on to downloading the images from the local repository http://archive.ubuntu.org.zw at work the following Monday.

I prefer SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop Service Pack 2 as i work with it on a daily basis i have grown to love it. Ubuntu 8.10 you stole my heart, so may you please give it back to me soon(lol)!!!

OpenSUSE 11.0 is out now and i am yet to get a feel of it, but i am sure it will is a monster of a system, with few improvements from its predecessor, which works like magic.

Can hybrid and battery powered cars supersede our dependency on fuel?

Firstly i would like to begin by applauding the manufacturers of the iconic Toyota Prius hybrid as a trend setter for the future.
Secondly i would like to acknowledge the efforts of BMW with their pilot project of using hydrogen instead of fuel.
Battery powered cars have emerged in South Africa with a price tage around R50 000 which is reasonble i think for a first time buyer.
I believe a journey starts with a single step and we have started on the journey to reduce our carbon footprint. Driving to the local supermarket to buy milk or bread is unnecessary, if one can walk or ride a bike.
In Africa cylcling is percieved as a sporting activity and not a viable means of transport.

Are generators the solution to our Electricity woes?

When we experience black outs generators kick in this has a negative impact as this increases the greehouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

I think when building Offices and Houses nowadays people should be considerate of the environment we live in, so as to reduce the effects of their carbon footprint.

A solution would be to build and eco-friendly Offices and homes with large windows to allow sunlight and natural ventilation in summer.

Instead of using generators, geysers powered by solar panels can be mounted on the roof and additional panels to power the home when power outtages occur/load shedding.

With souring fuel costs Generators are and expensive route economically and environmentally. They also belch out lethal CO2 levels, in addition to emmissions from motorvehicles.

South Africa has set the benchmark, where citizens although in the upper class have begun to build eco-friendly homes and offices, you can find out more information from http://www.hybridliving.co.za/

Can the world do more to reduce e-waste?

I would like to applaud the work of Computer Aid Society which has made great strides in increasing the computer literacy levels in Africa by donating used computers from the diaspora to Universities and schools.

I would like to appeal to the developed countries, to donate their old and dead power supplies to Computer Aid. At my workplace we repair what seems at first glance to be a dead power supply.

Upon thorough inspection it could be simply a burnt varistor chip, capacitor or transformer chip.

The power supplies can be refurbished and re-used and ultimately reducing the levels of e-waste.

For computer components that have been condemed, these should be stripped for spare parts.

In developed countries there is a culture to throw away a component due to a minor fault, however in developing countries there is a culture of repairing and refurbishing machines.
