Can hybrid and battery powered cars supersede our dependency on fuel?

Firstly i would like to begin by applauding the manufacturers of the iconic Toyota Prius hybrid as a trend setter for the future.
Secondly i would like to acknowledge the efforts of BMW with their pilot project of using hydrogen instead of fuel.
Battery powered cars have emerged in South Africa with a price tage around R50 000 which is reasonble i think for a first time buyer.
I believe a journey starts with a single step and we have started on the journey to reduce our carbon footprint. Driving to the local supermarket to buy milk or bread is unnecessary, if one can walk or ride a bike.
In Africa cylcling is percieved as a sporting activity and not a viable means of transport.
